Phalaenopsis orchids, commonly known as "Moth Orchids," are popular and beautiful flowering plants. Here's a care guide to help you keep your Phalaenopsis orchid healthy and thriving:
Place your Phalaenopsis orchid in bright, indirect light. They prefer filtered or dappled sunlight. - Avoid exposing them to direct sunlight, as this can lead to leaf burn. NO SUN!!!
Phalaenopsis orchids prefer temperatures between 65°F to 80°F (18°C to 27°C) during the day and slightly cooler at night. - Protect them from sudden temperature drops and drafts.
Use room temperature water. Make sure that water drains completely away. Water every 5 to 7 days or when dry and warm. Roots should be a silver-grey colour once watered roots will be bright green. Avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot. Ensure proper drainage in the pot to prevent waterlogged conditions. Reduce water in colder months. Do not water in winter at night or on cold days
Use a well-draining orchid mix, such as a bark-based medium. Repot your orchid every 1-2 years or when the potting mix breaks down. Make sure the pot has adequate drainage holes to prevent water accumulation. Use stones at bottom for weight
Use a balanced orchid fertilizer diluted to half the recommended strength. Feed your orchid every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Always half strength! Clean water after every alternative feed. Feed 1x per month when plant is in rest
Phalaenopsis orchids benefit from good air circulation. Avoid placing them in closed or overly crowded spaces
Remove spent flowers and yellowing leaves to encourage new growth. If plant is healthy leave blooming spike, only cut when spike turns brown and cut above the node. Trim any dead or rotting roots during repotting
Use stakes or clips to support the flower spike if it becomes too tall or if the blooms are heavy. This helps prevent breakage
Keep an eye out for pests such as scale, mealybugs, and aphids. Treat promptly with Isopropyl alcohol or Rose Protector. Immediately isolate a plant with issues to prevent your collection getting sick.
- Prevent fungal and bacterial issues by avoiding overwatering and providing good air circulation
Phalaenopsis orchids may have a rest period after blooming. During this time, reduce watering and fertilizer until you see new growth
Remember that individual orchids may have unique needs, so it's essential to observe your plant and adjust care accordingly. With proper attention, your Phalaenopsis orchid can bloom for several months each year.
